Nature Weaving

Nature Weaving

My artistic life continues to evolve. Over the winter, I took up weaving.

There is a delicious meditative focus from repetition as you pass threads back and forth. You can’t exactly zone out. The materials require attention to detail and there is problem solving along the way.

I have been branching out into natural materials and objects around the garden and shed and I invite you to try this with me on April 11th at the next Art & Nature Retreat.

We will literally “branch out” by making weaving frames from branches. I’ve been collecting some interesting sticks to play with and we will go on a gathering walk so that you can choose materials that call to you.

My garden is overflowing with last season’s ornamental grasses and dried leaves from ginger and turmeric. We will turn them into cord and braids, then work them into the weavings, along with string, sashiori fabric strips, and sticks. Garden flowers and botanical inks can add a touch of color.

It will be a fun day and a little different than previous retreats. Tickets are available now through April 7. All the details are here: https://mediatinker.com/product/apr-11-2026-art-nature-retreat-6/retreat-6/

How I’ve used a decade of theme words

I'm a believer in reflection and holding space for myself. One of the ways I have done that for the last decade is to seek a single word to guide my year. In 2009, fed up with my spending and with the consumer world we live in, I decided my theme for the year would be...

Intuitive art in action

This is what I drew during last week's Intuitive Art class. What is it, exactly? Happiness. That's what I wrote in on the back of paper; the sankalpa of that day's practice. And with Happiness in mind I followed my own instructions to start the drawing: "First, make a...
